Aug 4, 2020 : The Supreme Court today directed the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to confirm that steps are taken to supply care to those senior citizens who reside alone during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R Subhash Reddy today directed the Ministry to confirm that maturity pension for these senior citizens is disbursed in a very timely manner.

The Court also recognized that senior citizens living alone during this pandemic they need to be assured of timely help should they make a request for the same.
Today, the Bench said that the government is obliged to take care of elderly people who are living alone by ensuring that essential goods and services are provided to them.
Moreover, the states have to ensure that they respond promptly as and when the senior citizens living alone make such requests.
The Centre was also asked ensure that all the safety precautions for COVID-19 are followed and that caregivers in old age homes be well equipped with masks, personal protection equipment (PPE) kits, and sanitizers. These directions were passed by the Supreme Court in a petition filed by former Rajya Sabha MP and Senior Advocate Dr. Ashwani Kumar. The Supreme Court had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of the fear of spread of the contagion in prisons and child care institutions and had passed certain directions for ensuring that the spread is contained in these places.

Pensioners Reaction : 1.Good step taken by Supreme Court.Whether it is being implemented in proper manner or not that should be taken care of.Some interim directive should also be issued by Supreme Court for enhancement of amount of Pension of EPF Pensioners.
2.As per this directive it is more important for the court to clear the petition pending for a long time in turn truly help the senior citizens who have been looking forward for there favourable response.
3.Let us see what betterment does this Modi govt. as well as the supreme Court does for retired senior citizens living alone or both in regards to the present monthly pension below Rs. 2000 only. The matter is also in supreme Court allowing dates after dates for last one year (approx). Thanks for the news.
4.We express our pensioner's gratitude,To Honourable Judges&CJI and Ashwin kumar Advocate.Sir,follow it up with government about developments, because" As a deaf man had blown his front cone " No result & ignore the advises /Legal aspects PM Modi, not care and prolong EPS95 pensioner's issue ,his intention to keep pending.Regards to Honourable cJI&Supreme court Judges
5. Hope Supreme Court pays similar attention and care in quicker disposal of the pending EPS 95 Cases before ut. Pending since Dec,2017.WP 233 is one of the very first case and numbers accrued to near 50 in the last 30 months.

11. Thanks for your information but I have no hopes from tho government and this judgement will also get buried like earlier one where SC had directed for taking care of sr citizen. Nothing happens except where vested interests of politicians/beaurocrats exist.
